Matt Burgess has as much experience with Bridgton Academy as anyone who has set foot in North Bridgton. Now on his second tour with the Academy, Matt is a 1988 graduate, who matriculated at Springfield College, where he played football and received his degree in Wellness. He then moved onto the University of Northern Colorado, receiving his Master’s Degree in Physical Education.

From 1999 to 2011 Burgess was an Assistant Football Coach at Bridgton Academy; he then had a four-year stint as Head Football Coach at Gardiner Area High School in Gardiner, Maine – his alma mater – where he rebuilt the program and created a successful football team that continues to be competitive.

In 2015, Burgess returned to Bridgton Academy, joining the Football program once again and teaching Anatomy and Physiology, as well as the Physics of Movement.

Coach Burgess is a Master Trainer of Heads-Up Football, USA Football’s safe tackling training initiative – and his experience has taken him all over the word teaching USA Football’s methods of safe tacking. From China to rural Vermont, Burgess has been making football safer and spreading the sport worldwide.

Matt founded the Bridgton Academy Black Knights Rugby Club in 2004, which recently celebrated its 12th anniversary.

Matt lives on campus during the school year with his wife, Diane.
